Originally from Lancashire, Jits moved with his partner to London and then to Brighton in 1998. Soon after moving down, Jits began volunteering for Sussex Aids Centre (S.A.C.) in Cavendish Street.

Ross Boseley: External Health Promoter and Community Fundraiser, THT Brighton

  External Health Promoter and Community FundraiserAfter Completing his Humanities Degree, where part of his dissertation looked at how past government policy including section 28 and HIV impacted on the sex lives of young gay men in the UK, Ross took on the roll of External Health Promoter and Community Fundraiser at, THT Brighton.

The main roll Ross and his team, including their dedicated group of volunteers, is to visit a wide range of places, allowing a broader variety of people to gain access to safer sex information and advice, condoms and lube. Read more

Health Promotion Coordinator, THT BrightonBefore joining the team at THT, Peter Boorman worked as a health promotion coordinator for the THT branch Eastbourne.

As part of the health promotion team, we visited the local gay venue, The Heart, as well as the local cruising areas on a regular bases, promoting safer sex through a range of literature. We also made people aware of the fast track HIV test service that was available. (Peter)

Welfare Rights Advisor, Terrence Higgins Trust, Brighton

Tim first became involved in welfare rights for people with HIV back in 1985. He volunteered for THT (London), providing voluntary support and advice once a fortnight to people who where struck down with HIV; a condition that at the time was deeply misunderstood.

You have to remember in the early 1980’s, if you disclosed your HIV positive status to a member of the benefit agency, it was quite likely that you would be evicted from the building; such was the fear of the condition at the time. Tim Procter.

Tim continued to volunteer for THT, while working full time as an interior designer. By 1988, the increasing demand for welfare advice, allowed Tim to take on the role as a fulltime, paid worker. Read more

Mandy South, HIV Health Trainer. HIV Heath Advisor, Terrence Higgins Trust

Mandy moved down to Brighton two years ago from Essex, where her work background varied from hairdressing, to working with young people with learning difficulties, and later as a trainee midwife. However, a change in personal circumstances, led Mandy to leave her home town and start afresh in Brighton, where she volunteered for THT as a community support volunteer.

Brighton Pride

Is Pride still relevant?

The first time I heard there was such a thing as ‘Gay Pride’ was way back in 1984, when I lived in Norwich. The only gay bar was hidden away above a straight pub, and the gay club, The Caribbean, was discretely situated round the back alley, above a chip shop and only open three nights a week.

This was when it was illegal to have gay sex unless you were over 21 and then there was a new disease that was affecting the gay community, but no one really wanted to talk about that. So the idea that there was a Gay Pride March through London, with a mass gathering in the park, sounded like paradise.

Lunch Positive

An important community project for HIV positive people.www.lunchpositive.org Upon arrival at the Methodist Community church in Dorset Street (just off St. James Street), the welcome smell of Fridays lunch came wafting down the stairs. (A lift is available ). The friendly receptionist and well placed sighs meant I soon found Gary and his team getting ready for the forty plus people who come every Friday lunch. Read more

Every four weeks, there seems to be a good cause attached to that particular month December can guarantee the general public know about World Aids Day, The weeks leading up to August, the world and it’s wife anticipate Brighton Pride (fingers crossed for 2010’s event going well.)
